Arizona State lands interior lineman Casey Tucker from Stanford

Jan 30, 2018, 2:43 PM

Herm Edwards’ ability to recruit was questioned when he got to Arizona State. His response? A commitment from a Rose Bowl champion graduate transfer.

Interior lineman Casey Tucker announced his decision to join the Sun Devils on social media Tuesday afternoon. He has one season of eligibility remaining after spending four seasons with Stanford and can play immediately as a graduate transfer.

A native of Chandler, Ariz., Tucker played at Hamilton High School and will return home for his final season of college football.

A four-star prospect according to 247 Sports, Tucker was ranked a top-100 recruit nationally in the 2014 class when he decided on the Cardinal.

He found success as an underclassman, playing in five games as a freshman in 2014 year and eventually became a full-time starter. As a sophomore in 2015, Tucker started all 14 games for Stanford including the team’s Rose Bowl victory over Iowa.

Injuries limited him to eight games as a junior and Tucker did not play in 2017.

The addition comes as ASU loses two starters from its offensive line. Center A.J. McCollum was a senior this past season and junior Sam Jones declared early for the NFL draft.

Tucker thrived as a tackle with Stanford but could be moved inside to fill the void left by Jones. At 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds, he could be effective in opening running lanes or helping protect the blind side of quarterback Manny Wilkins.
