Report: Arizona State hires recently appointed Nebraska assistant hoops coach Rashon Burno to same position

It didn’t take long for Nebraska assistant basketball coach Rashon Burno to go from “newly appointed” to “former”.

50 days, in fact.

After being named to head coach Tim Miles’ coaching staff on May 15, Burno, 37, is bolting Lincoln and heading west to Tempe, where he will join Bobby Hurley’s coaching staff at Arizona State.

Burno told the Omaha World-Herald that the choice to leave Nebraska was “purely a family decision.”

A former player for Hurley’s father, Bobby Hurley Sr., at legendary St. Anthony’s High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, Burno considers the Hurleys virtual next-of-kin after losing both parents at the tender age of eight.

“Bobby Hurley was somebody I’ve looked up to my whole life,” Burno said. “And Mr. Hurley changed my life. It would be extremely hard for me to not be there for people I consider family.

“If this was Joe Schmoe as the head coach at Arizona State, this never happens. I don’t have a crystal ball. It was a tough decision, but I hope it works out for everybody.”
