David Johnson checks in to Cards camp still awaiting contract extension

David Johnson skipped mandatory minicamp in June as he negotiated a contract extension. While that’s not been officially concluded as of Monday morning, good news regarding those discussions came in the form of a tweet posted by the Arizona Cardinals running back.

The fourth-year pro posted a video of himself in front of his Cardinals locker, helmet atop his head and all, as he reported to camp four days before the full team is officially back to work.

The running back told AZCardinals.com that negotiations with the team over his contract are going “in a positive way.”

“I trust my agency, Sportstars, and I know they’ll get it done when the time comes,” he added.

Johnson checked in to training camp Monday along with rookies, quarterbacks and players returning from injury. Johnson, coming off a wrist injury suffered in Week 1 of 2017, is among that group.

Arizona’s full roster will report for camp on Friday.

Johnson, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $1.88 million, was injured against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 10, 2017. The Northern Iowa product missed the rest of the year after undergoing wrist surgery.

He appeared for the Cardinals during voluntary workouts in early April and said he was 100 percent healthy. Johnson then decided to hold out of minicamp as his future with the team was negotiated.

During 2016, his second NFL season, Johnson rushed for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns to go with 879 receiving yards and four more scores on the ground.
