Cardinals specialty license plate most popular among Valley sports teams

Specialty license plates are a good way to show support for a local team and there’s one Arizona team that’s dominating the market — the Arizona Cardinals.

The Arizona Department of Transportation released numbers for the amount of specialty license plates owned through the fiscal year of 2018 for the four major professional sports teams in the state and folks had almost 75,000 Cardinals license plates.

How’d that compare to the other three teams? The Diamondbacks had 12,000 plates, the Suns 4,500 plates and the Coyotes 3,000 plates.

Even Arizona’s three major colleges didn’t come close to the Cardinals. The University of Arizona had 24,000 plates, Arizona State had 21,000 plates and Northern Arizona had 3,000 plates.

The only specialty Arizona license plate to have a greater number than the Cardinals was the veteran’s plate with 92,000.

The gaudy figure actually dropped from 2017, when almost 77,000 people owned Cardinals plates.

Maybe that could be due to the Cardinals’ 3-13 season in 2018, but with No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray and new coach Kliff Kingsbury in tow, don’t be surprised if that number grows again.

A specialty license plate in Arizona costs $25 initially and has a $25 annual renewal. Cardinals Charities received $17 of those fees, which supports programs designed to improve lives of children, women and minorities in the state.

The Cardinals open their regular season Sept. 8 at home against the Detroit Lions.
