ASU’s Samantha Noennig wins the NCAA women’s shot put title
Arizona State sophomore Samantha Noennig claimed the NCAA Women’s Shot Put outdoor championship on Thursday night after a thrilling finish at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Coming into the event, Noennig was the fifth seed and in seventh place before catapulting herself to first after her fifth throw.
Her final throw measured in at 59 feet, 6.25 inches, which put her in the lead by only three centimeters.

“The first few weren’t so good and I kind of got mad and knew I needed to hit one,” Noennig said to SunDevils.com. “It worked out well and I was able to pull through in the end. I wasn’t about to go down easy, so I just let it happen.”
Early in the season, Noennig won the indoor championship title, making it the second consecutive season sweep for ASU after Maggie Ewen swept last year’s titles.
After the shot put win by Noennig, ASU was in second place behind Arkansas heading into Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championship.
