Two freshman wide receivers for Arizona State recorded their first career touchdowns against UNLV on Saturday night in Tempe.

Redshirt freshman Johnny Wilson caught his in the second quarter for the team’s first score of the game and redshirt LV Bunkley Shelton caught his in the fourth quarter.

Wilson scored his on a basic curl route toward the middle of the end zone.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels threw the ball a little behind Wilson in stride, but the target twisted his body in stride and pulled it in.

He entered ASU as a consensus top-100 recruit as a 6-foot-7 receiver from Pacoima, Calif.

He started in first game as a true freshman last year against USC, but struggled with multiple drops. His first season then took a dive when a COVID-19 outbreak kept the team inactive for three weeks.

Wilson came back strong with four catches in his return against UCLA. He finished the four-game season with six grabs but none in the end zone.

Daniels nearly hit Wilson for a touchdown on ASU’s first drive Saturday. The big receiver ran a fade route to the end zone, but cornerback Nohl Williams made an impressive play on the ball to take it away.

Still, Wilson finally received the celebratory headbutts from his teammates following a touchdown reception with 13:42 reaming in the opening half.

Bunkley-Shelton’s catch came on a corner route.

Daniels led the 5-foot-11 receiver just short of the front corner of the end zone where he caught the ball at the five yard line.

After making one man miss, Bunkley-Shelton dove into the end zone for the score.

Redshirt junior kicker Cristian Zendejas came in for both extra points in his first action of the season, making 4-of-5 extra point attempts. He was 1-for-1 on field goal attempts.

He returned to the Sun Devils just before the season started after he previously entered the transfer portal.
