The Arizona Cardinals are hosting a girls football camp this Saturday at State Farm Stadium.
Up to 125 girls, ages 6-12, will have the opportunity to learn the basics of flag football from 9-10:30 a.m. on Lawn C on the southside of the stadium.
Linebacker Dennis Gardeck, wide receiver Antoine Wesley, Arizona cheerleaders, Big Red and Cardinals alumni will also be participating and helping lead drills throughout the event.
It’s a great way for girls to pick up a sport that has taken off recently.
“Almost half of the NFL’s fanbase is female. And particularly how it relates to football participation, flag football among girls is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, particularly the high school level,” senior VP of media relations Mark Dalton told KTAR News on Thursday. “Arizona is one of just six states that sanction high school flag football. I know more are expected to join that list and I hope they do.
“This coming March, six teams from Chandler Unified School District will play in the first organized schedule for girls flag football in Arizona high school history. This is a real booming segment and we just love the fact that so many people of all ages and genders are gravitating to the sport.”
Additionally, there will also be a Family Fan Fest that includes inflatables, interactive games and a food truck.
“It’s really an exciting event for us,” Dalton added. “It’s our second annual girls flag football camp. … It’s been hugely popular and really an exciting event for us.”
