The College Football Playoff committee has spoken for the first time and has ranked Todd Graham’s Arizona State Sun Devils 14th in its initial rankings, released Tuesday.
The 6-1 Devils lead the Pac-12 South heading into Saturday’s home game against the 18th-ranked Utah Utes.
ASU is third among Pac-12 teams in the poll, trailing only Oregon (5th) and Arizona (12th).
Mississippi State tops the poll, followed by Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss.
For the first time ever, there will be a four-team playoff to determine college football’s national champion. The rankings are determined by a 12-member committee comprised of athletic directors (Jeff Long, Barry Alvarez, Pat Haden, Oliver Luck and Dan Radakovich), former coaches (Tyrone Willingham and Tom Osborne), a former conference commissioner (Mike Tranghese), a former reporter (Steve Weiberg) and other heads of state and administrators (Michael C. Gould, Tom Jernstedt and Condoleezza Rice).
